"The Page Turner", "Shakti", "The lost city"

Hello film fans !

On August 20th, 21th and 22nd, we have had three days of cinema at 3 euros in Paris, the opportunity to see current films before the future events of the latest Night Shyamalan’s film called in French “La jeune fille de l’eau” and the latest Gold Palm from the Cannes Festival 2006, in French “Le vent se leve”or in English “The wind that shakes the Barley” from Ken Loach.

Cannot wait to see them and let you know my comments!

In the meanwhile, three different films to introduce you:

-          La tourneuse de pages”, "The Page Turner", with Catherine Frot, Deborah Francois and Pascal Greggory from Denis Dercourt, a thriller in the same line as “L’accompagnatrice” from Claude Chabrol- 1h25

-          Shakti, the power" with Karisma Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor and Nana Patekar from Khrishna Vamsi, a nice Bollywood - 2h50

-          Adieu Cuba!”, "The Lost City", the first film directed by Andy Garcia with the pretty and natural Ines Sastre, the icon of the “Tresor” perfume from Lacome; Bill Murray, man without name, very engaging (attachant) and with a special humour – about 2 hours

* LA TOURNEUSE DE PAGE / THE PAGE TURNER

5 reasons to see this film:

-          it is subtle (subtile) thriller where fascination and attraction are mixed with a certain kind of manipulation. The characters’ psychology is well performed (interpreter). The slow rythm and sometimes the lack of dialogues emphasize (accentuer) stress and suspense.

-          the couple Catherine Frot and Deborah Francois is fascinating. Icy (glaciale) and sensual, the Belgian heroin of “L’enfant” from Dardenne Brothers, Deborah Francois is sublimated (sublimer).

-          for the classical music enthousiats, this film offers us a charmant palette from original compositions of Jerome Lemonnier to Bach, Schubert or Chostakovitch. The piano learners can understand better the heroin’s passion for this musical instrument.

-          to discover Denis Dercourt’s universe much better as he is a film director (cineaste) with a musical education. “La tourneuse de pages” is the bestseller film abroad as 24 countries bought it.

-          to admire the performance of Catherine Frot playing carefully piano as she trained long hours

A short pitch:

It is the story of a revenge, not a simple revenge, a very delicate one as the young woman looks like an angel and seems to be very shy and sedate (pose).

Gifted to (douee pour) play piano, Melanie is still a little girl when she failed to pass the admission examination to the Conservatory. While she was self-confident at the beginning, the jury president, a famous piano concert performer (concertiste) destabilized her due to a offhand (desinvolte) behaviour.

Ten years later, even though she had given up (renoncer) playing piano, she has the opportunity to meet again this lady and help her to turn her scores (partitions de musique).

A few words about the film director:

Denis Dercourt is a music teacher at the Strasbourg Conservatory and a former viola (alto) within the French symphonic Orchestra. Grandson of a film producer, son of a TV producer and a piano teacher, he wrote this story when he was in Japan. In this country, the revenge is a very strong scheme. He was inspired and melt it with his musical education and universe He took part also to the composition of music with Jerome Lemonnier. Three years after “Mes enfants ne sont pas comme les autres (2002)”, Denis Dercourt signed a sucessful film.

* SHAKTI – The power

If you like Bollywood or would like to discover a part of Indian traditions, let us see this film as it is a mixture of spaghetti western, romance, dance and songs, slow motions, Indian humour, traditions’ cult and duty sense.

The story of a clash between Indian migrants in Canada and Indian living in a primitive area in Rajasthan where fear and ancestral rules dominate.  It is also a fight for freedom, the cry of a mother to feed his son, the generational conflict.

In a few words:

Nandini is a young woman expatriated in Canada. She was living with her uncles when she felt in love with Shektar who quickly married her. She gave birth to a son.

Seven years later, one day, her husband decided to come back to India as her mother was in danger. Nandini discovered India as she has never imagined before. His father-in-law is a violent and reactionary man. He controls a part of the area and is a real tyrant.

While Nandini and her husband has decided to go back to Canada, Shektar, her husband is murdered (assassine).

* ADIEU CUBA ! - THE LOST CITY

The first film of Andy Garcia reminds us parts of “The Godfather” from Coppola. It is a pleasant story about politics in Cuba from Batista’s exile to Castro’s putch and also a family tragedy. The latin rythms stresses (accentuer) actions, dancers are remarkable. A tear of romanticism (romantisme) glides (planer) all along the film and the landscapes and sceneries (decors) are meticulous (soigne).

The direction (mise en scene) is quite good and Ines Sastre is the beauty of the film. The impossible love story and pains on the Fellove family gives to this film, a sensitive and novelistic (romance) point of view of the crual political events in Cuba in the 1960s.

Andy Garcia has recovered his origins from Cuba and I really appreciated his role and his film even if some scenes seem a little bit longer sometimes. So, now you can make your choice and let us know your comments! Enjoy going to cinema!

Some figures on films from Studio Magazine – September 2006:

-          Pirates of Carribean part 2 is on top list in Europe

In Great Britain, 57 millions euros in 4 weeks, in Belgium, only 1 week to reach the number of spectators of “Cars” in 28 days.

Exception for Spain dominated by Da Vinci Code, Cars and Superman Returns and in Italy, only as Pirates of the Caribbean part 2 is not yet showed on this two countries.

-          Mon nom est Tsosi” 200 000 spectators in 2 weeks in France (MK2)

-          Fete du Cinema in France: 2,8 millions people, less 12% in comparison to 2005, due to the World Football Cup

Interesting article on Studio – September 2006 on the Last Sitting from Bert Stern (see also my article on the Maillol Museum).

Talk to you soon!
