Introducing yourself, organization of a company

Dear all,

Today, a short reminder for introducing yourself and other people.

- In the morning Hello! Good morning! Bonjour!

- after 12:00 o’clock/noon: How do you do? (when you talk to your manager)

My name is Sarah Jones.

Answer:I am Philip Smith. Nice/pleased to meet you.Bonjour! Je suis Philippe Smith.

Take a seat. Can I get you some coffee ?

Asseyez-vous. Est-ce que je peux vous offrir un cafe?

You can reply :

- yes, that would be nice ! avec plaisir, merci!

- Yes, that would be lovely! (if you are a lady) / yes, I would enjoy that!

When the assistant comes with two cup of coffee, Philip Smith says:

- Have you met Laura, my assistant?

Answer:

Yes, we met when I arrived.

No, I did not. Pleased to meet you.

If another person comes, you will be introduced in this way:

Patsy, may I introduce you to Jason, who works for Beauty magazine?

Jason, I would like to introduce you to Patsy. She is our sales manager.

Patsy and Jason says at the same time: How do you do? Pleased to meet you...

Jason can also says if he has already heard about Patsy:

I have been looking forward to meeting you.

J’ai tellement entendu parler de vous...

So have I… moi aussi

Another reminder about the organization of a company

The vocabulary used varies from one firm to another. Depending (selon) on the field of activity, the mother country and the firm’s tradition, one will find many differences. Moreover, the importance of a job is not necessary reflected by its label (intitule).

Hereunder, you will find a few frequently found titles and their equivalents. It is often useful to ask more precisions about someone’s work within the firm, as well as the name and title of the person he or she reports.
